🌿 What’s Getting in Your Way?

It’s a simple question that can stop us in our tracks: “What’s getting in your way?”

Coaches often ask this when someone says they want to do something — start the business, finish the proposal, have the conversation — but somehow, they haven’t. It’s not meant to challenge your motivation or question your capability. Instead, it invites gentle curiosity. It’s a doorway into understanding what’s really happening beneath the surface.

Why This Question Matters

When we pause to ask ourselves what’s getting in the way, we shift from self-criticism to self-awareness. We stop saying “I should have done it by now” and start asking “What might be blocking me?” That subtle change turns frustration into insight.

Maybe what’s in the way is fear — of failure, judgment, or even success. Maybe it’s exhaustion, perfectionism, or simply not knowing where to begin. Sometimes it’s a practical barrier (time, money, resources). Other times, it’s an emotional or mental one we’ve never taken the time to name.

Ask Without Judgment

The power of this question lies in how you ask it — especially of yourself. This isn’t a test of discipline or willpower. It’s an act of compassion. When you ask without judgment, you create space for honesty and healing. You allow yourself to acknowledge the real reason something feels hard — and that acknowledgment is the first step toward movement.

Try it now:

  • What’s something I keep saying I want to do?
  • What’s getting in my way?
  • What small step can I take to clear that path?

Even small awareness shifts can build incredible momentum.

Coaching in Everyday Life

While this question comes from the coaching world, you don’t need a coach to use it. You just need a willingness to listen inwardly. A good coach simply mirrors back your own wisdom — helping you find the answers you already hold.

Whether you’re a student, parent, leader, or friend, asking “What’s getting in your way?” can open conversations that lead to growth, empathy, and understanding — both for yourself and others.

So, the next time you feel stuck, don’t push harder. Pause and ask with kindness.
